Ries Gorthanes

A Cairhienin man.

Physical Description

He has broad shoulders and is unusually tall for a Cairhienin. He is good looking with an inch-long scar from his left eye to his ear. (NS,Ch13)

Dressed as a Tower Guard captain and giving his name as Ries Gorthanes, he tries to pry into Moiraine's banking affairs. Ilain Dormaile has him detained, but he bribes one of his captors into letting him go. (NS,Ch13)
As the Bluewing sails into Northharbor, Moiraine spots Gorthanes talking to the harbormistress and watching her ship. (NS,Ch14)

NS,Ch13 – Gorthanes speaks as an educated, cultured man. He might even be a noble.
NS,Ch13 – Ilain Dormaile tells Moiraine about Ries Gorthanes prying into her affairs. Moiraine thinks someone must have gotten wind of the White Tower's plans for her and the Sun Throne.
NS,Ch21 – As he dies, Caniedrin tells Moiraine that he was hired to assassinate her. She believes it must have been Gorthanes.
NS,Ch24 – Revealing herself as Moiraine Damodred in the Aesdaishar Palace, she worries that Gorthanes may learn of her presence.
